Book Release: Bengali Translation of 'Kafka on the Shore, Part 1 by Haruki Murakami' on 5 March 2016

Consul General of Japan in Kolkata, Mr. Kazumi Endo, attended the book release of ‘Samudra Tate Kafka, Part I’ on 5 March 2016 at K.P Memorial Hall in Jadavpur University, Kolkata- 700 032. This book is the Bengali translation of Japanese author Haruki Murakami’s ‘Kafka on the Shore, Part 1’ and is said to be the first translation of Murakami's works into a south asian language. The book was published by Jadavpur University Press and translated by Professor Abhijit Mukherjee of Jadavpur University.
Mr. Kaoru Miyamoto, Director General, Japan Foundation, New Delhi, Professor Supriya Chaudhuri, Professor Emeritus, Jadavpur University, Mr. Pradeep Kumar Ghosh, Registrar, Jadavpur University, Mr. Abhijit Gupta, Director, Jadavpur University Press and Professor Abhijit Mukherjee, former Head of Department of Electrical Engineering and Teacher in Charge, Japanese Studies, School of Language and Linguistics, Jadavpur University were also present
Mr. Kazumi Endo sincerely thanked Professor Abhijit Mukherjee and commended him for his extraordinary diligence in translating this book from one of the most difficult languages, Japanese, and expressed deep appreciation for Jadavpur University Press's strong initiative in making this project a reality. Mr. Endo expressed hope that this translation work of the popular contemporary Japanese book will make the geographical distance between India and Japan shorter and provide an opportunity for the general Bengali people to feel Japan intimately.
Mr. Kaoru Miyamoto stated that it is an honor for Japan Foundation to work with Jadavpur University and Jadavpur University Press and informed the audience that one of the activities of Japan Foundation is to sponsor translations of the works of Japanese authors into other languages. He thanked Professor Abhijit Mukherjee and Jadavpur University Press for their efforts and wished them the very best for the Bengali translation of the second volume of the book.
Mr. Pradeep Kumar Ghosh, Registrar, Jadavpur University, stated that he is pleased to know that Jadavpur Univeristy Press is bringing classical works of other countries into West Bengal and also taking Bengali classical works to Japan. He expressed hope of further cooperation with Japan Foundation in various other activities of the arts department of Jadavpur University and thanked Mr. Kazumi Endo and Mr. Kaoru Miyamoto for gracing the occasion.
