Film Festival: Nippon Talkies

In collaboration with Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata and the Japan Foundation, School of Mass Communications and School of Film and Media Sciences, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KiiT), organized a Japanese Film Festival. A selection of four Japanese films with English subtitles were screened at Capmus 7 Auditorium of KiiT, Bhubaneswar on 16 and 17 February 2018.

Consul General of Japan in Kolkata, Mr. Masayuki Taga, expressed his gratitude to KiiT for having provided the venue and for taking all necessary measures in organizing the film festival and hoped that the students of Kiit and people of Bhubaneswar will enjoy watching the Japanese movies.
Honorable Founder, KiiT and KISS, Dr. Achyuta Samanta, expressed pleasure that KiiT received an opportunity to organize a Japanese film festival and thanked the Consul General for his kind presence. He also encouraged the students of KiiT to make the most of this opportunity, see the movies and promote the same in the campus.

The Letter

Plot: Tsuyoshi, the elder brother becomes unemployed and commits a robbery in order to obtain the school tuition fees for his younger brother, Naoki and, in the process, kills someone by mistake. While Tsuyoshi is serving his sentence, Naoki undergoes a rough life because of his elder brother, and gradually, begins to despise him. Naoki later marries Yumiko who also ends up being victimized by people around her because of the marriage. Naoki finally writes to his elder brother to explain all the difficulties he has been facing, and asks to sever their ties as brothers. The film highlights what it means to commit a crime and what is punishment through the lives of these brothers.

Plot: Tomoko and two of her classmates volunteer to deliver lunches left behind by the school's brass band on the way to support the baseball team at a crucial game. However, when the band subsequently suffers a bout of food poisoning, Tomoko and her companions seize the chance to ditch summer school as replacement musicians. Despite a severe lack of talent, they gradually succumb to the infectious rhythms of big band jazz and start to take the music seriously. Just as they are about to perform in public for the first time, the band members they replaced return and the ring-ins are shunted to the sidelines. However, this fails to dampen the girls' newfound spirit, and they take up part-time jobs and practice in the streets to achieve their dream of playing at the school's music festival.
