29th Japanese Language Speech Contest (Eastern India)

The 29th Japanese Language Speech Contest (Eastern India) was organized by the Indo-Japan Welfare and Cultural Association (IJWCA) in collaboration with the Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata on Saturday, 19 November 2016 at Jamini Roy Art Gallery, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Kolkata.
22 candidates participated in the contest from various Japanese language institutes and Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan. They were divided into ‘Junior’ and ‘Senior’ categories depending on whether they have received 500 and less or more than 500 hours of training in Japanese language respectively. Mr. Norio Shibuya, Cultural Secretary, Japan Club in Kolkata, Mr. Yasuhiko Tanaka, Deputy Consul General and Ms. Manami Kato, Vice Consul of Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata were present as judges.
The Consul General of Japan in Kolkata, Mr. Masayuki Taga, graced the occasion and gave away the certificates and prizes to the winners and other participants as well after addressing the audience. The Consul General also hosted a luncheon with a spread of Japanese dishes for the participants and their teachers at his residence on Sunday, 20 November 2016.

All the winners also received gifts from IJWCA and the 1st position holders of both categories received a special prize from Japan Club in Kolkata.
The above candidates (except Ms. Shreya Das) are eligible to compete in the All India Japanese Language Speech Contest to be held in New Delhi, with the winners from Northern, Southern and Western India organized by the Monbusho Scholars Association of India (MOSAI). The winners at the All India level may get the privilege to visit Japan in addition to other benefits and recognition.
This contest aimed to encourage students to express spontaneously their own thoughts in Japanese language. It was not merely a memory test of a written speech and was followed by a round of questions in Japanese from the judges after the completion of every participant’s speech.
