Support for the Japan Gallery in Tagore House of Rabindra Bharati University

The Government of Japan has decided to assist the refurbishment of the Japan Gallery in Tagore House of Rabindra Bharati University. Under the Government of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects Scheme, on behalf of the Government of Japan, the Consul General of Japan in Kolkata Mr. Masayuki Taga has signed a Grant Contracts, amounting to sum of US$ 31,891 with Prof. Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury, Vice Chancellor of the University on 13 March, 2019 at the Tagore House.
   
This project aims to refurbish the Gallery by highlighting Rabindranath Tagore’s relation with Japan and cultural and intellectual exchanges between the two countries which were initiated at Tagore House, “Jorasanko” and Tagore’s Japan visits.                                                                                                                                                                                                       
 
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) visited Japan three times: in 1916, in 1924 and in 1929 and two more short transit visits en route in 1917 and in 1929.  His visits became milestones in the timeline of Japan-India relations. During his visits the poet-philosopher met Japanese writers, artists, musicians, educationists, politicians, and journalists. Tagore also delivered many important lectures and touched the heart of the common Japanese. 
 
Prof. Basu Ray Chaudhury, while expressing sincere appreciation to the Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata for the support for refurbishment of the Gallery, mentioned, “Tagore-Japan relation connects the people of two countries, India and Japan. The Japan Gallery introduces this good relations initiated by Tagore.
 
In his speech at the signing ceremony Mr. Taga mentioned that “Even before the Tagore’s five times visits to Japan, intellectual and cultural exchanges had been initiated and promoted at “Jorasanko”, Tagore House by Tagore Family with prominent Japanese such as Tenshin Okakura, thinker and artistic leader, Taikan Yokoyama, painter. After several months’ renovation, you can enjoy the significant encounter of India and Japan through the Gallery.
